This is more than a fleeting image of kindness. This is about a fourth grade class from Chaparral Elementary School, who served for five months as mentors, partners, and buddies in Special Olympics New Mexico’s first Young Athletes Program.
The Young Athletes Program was created to teach fundamental sports skills to two through seven year old children with intellectual disabilities. We are using it as an opportunity to engage youth in our movement and create better understanding and more inclusive schools through the Special Olympics mission.
For every act that speaks of cruelty, greed, and intolerance that you see on the nightly news – or for the mean ways we treat each other during the course of an ordinary day, let this photograph serve as living proof that in today’s world the power of a touch, a kind word, or a small act of caring can in fact change the course of EVERYTHING. Let each of us do what we can to better protect, love, and learn from our children.
